Cherry Pie

I don't usually do lattice tops, but this one was fun.

You can cheat and not weave the pieces, just lay them all in one direction, and then put the other direction on top of them. I found that it's not necessary to work with long strips on the cross direction, just have them long enough to tuck the cut end under the other direction.

Coming at the end of July will be two 8-pound buckets of pitted pie cherries. One is the traditional Montmorency, and the other is Balaton, a strain brought from Hungary and further developed in Michigan. Balatons are a little sweeter and meatier than the Montmorency, but still considered to be a tart pie cherry. I'm excited to find out how they cook up in a pie.

I seldom make pies anymore because after Ted has the first piece he is
back to cherry pecan icecream.

These were my first pies of the summer. I need to use up last year's fruit so I'll have the jars to freeze this year's fruit.

Cherry pie is one of my favorites. I made a lattice work once and I remember it was a lot of work. Still the lattice makes a beautiful pie.

I was showing off because I was going to take it a potluck, because I agree they are too much work. I did two pies with lattice and decided to keep the cherry one at home. I'm glad I did because it would have been wasted on those people.
