I don't usually do lattice tops, but this one was fun.
You can cheat and not weave the pieces, just lay them all in one direction, and then put the other direction on top of them. I found that it's not necessary to work with long strips on the cross direction, just have them long enough to tuck the cut end under the other direction.
Coming at the end of July will be two 8-pound buckets of pitted pie cherries. One is the traditional Montmorency, and the other is Balaton, a strain brought from Hungary and further developed in Michigan. Balatons are a little sweeter and meatier than the Montmorency, but still considered to be a tart pie cherry. I'm excited to find out how they cook up in a pie.
