Where Does That Wool Come From

I knew a lot of shearers in Pt Augusta back in the 1960s and a rough bunch they were, moving from shed to shed they followed the work wherever it was , a lot of them would blow their cheques in a matter of days in between jobs, and broke, they would move on for more hard work and do it over again.
Today shearers are in short supply not many new ones filling the shoes, nowadays what with the mining and oil boom there's more money to be had in oil and gas fields and mines without the hard yakka in the sheds.
These photos will give a look at the shearers at work both the old way of blade shearing from a painting , the chap resting would be the contractor or boss cockie the owner of the sheep, in another you will see a woman shearer at work

Looks like back breaking work. I think I'll just stick to the carding, spinning and knitting and leave the shearing to someone else.

Did you ever see the movie "The Sundowners" with Deborak Kerr? One of my favorite movies of all time though I am not a Mitchum fan. Take a look and read the last section--I am sure you are familiar with some of these places!

lived at Pt Augusta back then KERR and MITCHAM stayed at our flashest pub and had a yarn to CHIPS Rafferty outside the Royal hotel while he was rolling a smoke .
All of the movies made about the bush were made in the flinders ranges area and nearby Quorn , the racing scene and saleyard scene for Captain Starlighte movie were shot at the PtAugusta track and saleyards ,
One of my favorites was the SHIRALEE staring Peter Finch another is SUNDAY TOO FAR AWAY

I love the dictionary. I didn't realize that's what fair dinkum means, it's good to know. Of course, most of what we know about Australia comes via Crocodile Dundee, and I suspect that's not the best source of information.

Crocodile Dundee was a bit over the top with his venacular, reckon the script was written by an American who was telling a lot of porkies because it set the aussie speak back a lot though the film 0ne and two raised a lot of laughs here

We have a Foster's beer commercial here that always starts off with "How to speak Australian". Never tried the beer.

for some reason we don't see Fosters add any more , and i dont like the beer prefer a VB thats made in Victoria , though for a good strong ale can't go pass a COOPERS made in south Australia by the Coopers family since the 1890s and still family controled
