Back in the1950s migration from Europe was in full swing, Australia needed workers for the boom after WW2 ended. English migrants were brought out on what became known as the ten pound Poms. that was what the government paid for their boat fare .
As there was a shortage of housing, camps were set up around Adelaide, eventually a new town was built by the housing trust at Elizabeth named after our Queen, where I live is now a suburb of Elizabeth city.
Adelaide was known back then as the city of churches , working class suburbs were well represented by them , night life consisted of 2 nights when movies were shown Wednesday and Saturday, if you went into the city they were shown 6 days a week, so as teenagers with motorcycle we congregated in the summer at the Semaphore beach because they had a carnival on every year , what you would call a fair I think
Now Sunday nights were a bit of a no go thing except for a days ride or the beach , BUT at the Finsbury migrant camp they had movies shown of a Sunday night , to gain entry you had to be a resident , however if you were invited by one you could get in .
So that was easy to get around , just had to chat a girl up that lived there of a Sunday afternoon, the motorcycle was a great help , there were plenty of motorcycles in Finsbury of a Sunday night .
Coincidently POMS were what we Aussies call the English , definitely not towards a Scotch or Irish man unless you wanted a fight .
