BY now I was let loose and was serving customers , not all wanted my services , would tell me they wanted POP to serve them , ah well we cant all be perfect. Around that time Australia was accepting a lot of immigrants from Europe , we called them Balts at first, then to cover the lot New Australians , as Bowden had a lot of factories , around about at 4.30 pm each day quite a few women would come in to get meat and they could not speak English , , we knew that it was pork and veal , or pigs liver they wanted mostly and after hand gestures and showing everything you thought they were asking for eventually was able to serve them , after a few weeks of this we had reached a rapport with them , even one or two conversations , by what we were told it must have been real bad in Europe even yeats after ww2 ,
At 16 I sat for my drivers licence , passed the ten only questions and was let loose on the roads for the sum of 2 dollars about half a weeks wages , Jock the boss promtply, when he heard I had a licence gave me the job of delivery boy , POP was given by Jock an 1929 Morris Cowley delivery van to use coming and going to work , 3 mornings a week I would drive into Adelaide itself, to pick up rabbits and pieces , the old Morris only had front wheel brakes , crank handle start , hand wipers , and a habit of backfiring when slowing down which I had to do many time because of traffic lights .
A policeman was on duty at all light controlled intersections and I received many a cheerful wave from them as I went pass , the Keystone cops had nothing on me , do it nowadays and you would get a hefty fine , looking back they were to me the fun times, do your work 5 days a week with the week ends your own.
