THE GHOST OF ALGEBUCKNA

Crews when working the old narrow gauge train line between Marree to Alice Springs, worked in pairs , one crew sleeping for 7 hours and then they would change over and continue on , two guards Stan and Brian always had worked the same train until the roster clerk placed them differently, one working the Ghan the other following, working on the chaser carrying the Ghan passengers cars
Stan stopping at Algebuckna to get a train order and knowing that Brian would also have to stop there, and that it would be dark when he did , before departing placed a stick on the inside of the door wrapped in toilet paper so it would fall out when opened .
The observer waiting for Brian at the phone box to receive his order told us later that Brian nearly had a heart attack when the door opened and the stick dropped out .
And so was the ghost legend born.
