Mr Walker, jock, or the boss as I have named him earlier , came and collected me for Pops funeral after which it was back to work , I had a few days to consider whether or not to ask him for the managers job , I knew all the customers, what meat to order on Mondays for the week , in fact everything that was needed , even handling the money and banking it .
Still had 6 months to go on the apprentice papers , I had done every thing, (in my book anyway) that I had been asked to do, my mum said go for it , but don't be disappointed because I might be considered too young , when nothing changed over the next two weeks, and he came in to see how things were going I asked him for the position .
Jock told me that he had been thinking about it and he would be agreeable to let me be the manager then he dropped another thing that I never knew, he had planned and booked a trip to England and wanted me to attend a meeting of managers to find out what he wanted us to do in his six months absence .
Was a very happy young man then had a good job, with a 7 pound ten shillings pay rise and free meat to top it off , my future looking good I went to the meeting at the Trocadeo restaurant in Adelaide where after having a great meal and a few ales in a private room , Jock took the floor and told us what he intended happening in his absence .
What it amounted to was we were to carry on normally his son in law Norman , would see to things if we had problems , each manager would collect another 5 pounds a week for managing the shop as his own , that meant banking the money in a special account , paying all the bills meat ,,electricity , wages etc, and what was in the bank at the end of six months or when he got home we would get half there of , there was no hesitation or debate and after a free night out we all agreed
