Save This Web Resource!

I posted this yesterday:

Two years ago I was approached by our local Humane Society, a wholly volunteer organization supported entirely by donations, to design and set up a web site for them. I agreed, charging them a bare minimum for the work. I would usually charge about a thousand dollars for a site of their magnitude, and I put the site up for less than a third of that. Remember that I am retired and live on a pittance. I have to sell art in order to even pay my utilities each month.

The site was done and I chose GoDaddy.com for the domain name and hosting. They are the rock-bottom cheapest host. The domain name and hosting for a two-year period came to a little over $165.00.

For the two years I maintained their site, taking volumes of photographs, making sure each fund raising event was posted ahead of time and each week I put up a photo of their "Pet of the Week," a dog, cat or other small animal they had for adoption in their many kennels.

The domain name and hosting contract is due to renew on Saturday, December 5th. I have been in frequent contact with them about getting it done. The renewals for two years would come to about the same amount... $165.

Tuesday I got an email from the staff asking me to post a notice on the site that due to severe drop off in donations, their Board of Directors has asked that the web site be shut down. They asked me to post a notice to that effect on the site. I did.

This saddens me to no end. I know that they are not the only organization suffering in these pitiful times. But I feel for the animals. I feel for the loss of this resource on the Internet that allows people to see the work they do at the Humane Society and the pets they have in their care.

I wish that I could do something. I have not charged them for the maintenance I do, but I cannot pay their fare. Jondude can barely pay for his own four cats' maintenance.

So if you want to see their site before the thing gets shut down on Saturday, go to https://www.senecahumane.org Link to site

What I did was to post this on a couple of my blogs and send it out by email to some animal-friendly friends. The response was good but not overwhelming. So far I have totaled a little over $150. Another firend on my writers' blog has just indicated that she will make a donation but she hasn't replied with the amount.

So I am posting this appeal again, along with some of the photos I have taken out there over the past two years.

Whatever happens, I must do the GoDaddy renewals Friday. That is two days from tonight.

I will do it, no matter what. I have a source from which I can borrow the money and put it in my bank account (right now that account has a $22.30 balance.) I will then be able to pay the GoDaddy cost via my debit card. That's the way it is done.

Then, when the donations arrive, I will bank them and be able to repay my loan.

Folks, the Humane Society of Seneca County is the cleanest and most humane facility for that purpose that I have ever seen. They have an absolute NO EUTHANASIA policy! They will only adopt out pets to families that qualify, and they absolutely do not recommend declawing or mangling animals' ears in order to make them show animals. These people live up to the name "Humane."

This is NOT for me. I am doing this because they can't afford it. I can't afford it either right now, but I am doing all this and the website work gratis!

I appreciate the donations that have been indicated and sent so far. Any more help will be blessed! If the donations go over the cost of the domain renewal and 2-years hosting fees, the funds will be donated to the Humane Society. (You must contact me via the MyBloggers email. If you wish to donate, email me with the amount. I will reply with my address.)

This is a photo of "Junior." He thanks you from the bottom of his kennel and wishes you a warm, homey and Merry Christmas.
