Same-sex Marriage in Connecticut

Here we go again. There is a bill before the State of Connecticut legislature to legalize same-sex marriage.

If you ask me, it’s about time.  (But I’m just stupid, so what do I know?)

However, this morning I heard an ad on the radio by The National Organization for Marriage (WHO?) telling me to call my state legislators and demand that they vote against this bill.

What the hell is The National Organization for Marriage? Something tells me that if you scratch their skin, they will bleed right-wing (so-called” Christian”) conservative blood.

Anyway, this ad states that the bill in question (SB-899) would further erode my existing, heterosexual marriage!  (You see how stupid I am? I had no idea that my marriage had eroded in the first place!)

You know, I really just don’t get it! If Bill and Steve are living together next door to me and want to get married, how in the hell does that affect the relationship I have with my wife, my kids, and my grandkids? I would REALLY LIKE somebody to explain that to me, because I guess I’m too damned stupid to see it for myself!

The ad also stated that this bill would force clergy members to perform same-sex marriages, even if they were against doing so.

I read the bill.  And you know something? I am foolish enough to believe it states just the opposite! The bill doesn’t force any priest, rabbi or other religious leader to anything against his or her conscience or religion. The following is a direct quote from the bill (Sec. 7):

“No member of the clergy authorized to join persons in marriage pursuant to section 46b-22 of the general statutes shall be required to solemnize any marriage in violation of his or her right to the free exercise of religion guaranteed by the fist amendment to the United States Constitution or section three of Article  first of the Constitution of the state.”

In other words, you can’t force anybody to do anything that they don’t want to do.

The good folks at The National Organization for Marriage also state in the ad that this bill would force educators to teach about homosexual lifestyles in schools to “indoctrinate our children.”

Huh?

First of all, I personally think it is an excellent idea to let my granddaughters know about homosexuality.  Why not? Maybe if they get good, sound information about it, they won’t develop irrational phobias about the lifestyle…like some folks obviously have!

Are these folks afraid that the “indoctrination” will breed more homosexuals?

Really?

Do they really think that being gay or straight is a conscious choice that people make?

You know something? I really can’t recall the exact moment when I sat down and said to myself, “Okay. There’s heterosexuality and there’s homosexuality.   I’m going to weigh up everything on both sides, and make my choice right now.”

I don’t know. Maybe I flipped a coin.  Heads – straight, tails – gay.

I wonder what’s wrong with me?!? You’d think I’d have at least SOME recollection of such a monumental decision in my life!

And you want to know something else that has me worried about my mental capabilities? I’ve read the entire bill through three times, and I cannot find one single, solitary word that mandates such things be taught in school! NOT ONE!

I really worry about myself!

Read the bill for yourself.  Click on the link below

I really hope somebody can set me straight (no pun intended) on this, because, as I said before, I guess I’m just too stupid to understand how allowing my gay friends to marry is going to destroy my life as I know it.

Please help.
