Barbara Bush Support for Gay Marriage

Barbara Bush, one of former President George W. Bush's twin daughters, is appearing in a new video voicing her support for same sex marriage.

"I'm Barbara Bush, and I'm a New Yorker for marriage equality," she says in a 22-second video released Monday by the Human Rights Campaign, a group that lobbies for equal treatment for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgenders.

"New York is about fairness and equality," she says in the video. "And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love."

The video ends with Bush, who is 29, imploring viewers to "join us."

The statement marks a public break between Bush and her father, who, as president, pushed for a constitutional amendment banning gay unions. But Barbara Bush is only the latest family member of a prominent Republican politician to come out in favor of gay marriage in recent years.

Last May, her mother, former First Lady Laura Bush, told CNN's Larry King gay marriage "is coming." "When couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have… the same sort of rights that everyone has," she said.

Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain, has been an outspoken supporter of gay rights, breaking with her father on the issue. Both she and her mother, Cindy McCain, appeared in ads protesting California's Proposition 8, which banned same sex marriage. Cindy McCain also spoke out against the "don't ask, don't tell" ban on gays serving openly in the military--though she later tried to temper the differences between her husband and herself on the issue.

Mary Cheney, the openly gay daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, has voiced support for same-sex marriage and has been credited with pushing her father to do the same.
