US Senate Republicans block law on pay discrimination

Republicans in the US Congress succeeded Wednesday in blocking a law aimed at overturning a Supreme Court decision that restricts women's ability to sue their employers for unequal pay.
The measure was named after Lilly Ledbetter, a woman who found after almost two decades of work as a foreman in a Goodyear tire factory in Alabama that she was being paid up to 40 percent less than her male colleagues.
Her case against her employer made it to the Supreme Court, but was rejected in May 2007, illustrating the court's shift to the right since President George W. Bush put two conservative judges on the bench in 2005.
Current law limits employers' liability in discrimination suits to six months, and the Supreme Court said the clock started ticking on this limit from when the employer fixed the salary.
In July, Democratic lawmakers got a bill through the House of Representatives that sets the six-month limit from the date of each discriminatory pay check.
However, in a Senate vote Wednesday, the text's supporters failed to gather the 60 votes needed to overturn a Republican blocking maneuver..
That "blocking Maneuver" is called the much bitched about by republicans, "Filibuster". Hope none of you ladies vote against your own best interests this coming November....
