The Bush Love Africa Trip ...

This is from the Rachel Maddow show, Thought it was interesting and would share...Here is the transcript too...

RACHEL MADDOW: The president is still on his Africa trip today.

AUDIO: Colonialism

MADDOW: Oh, i’m sorry, wrong sound cut there. What I meant to say, was...

BUSH: Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.

MADDOW: From Africa. Bush likes Africa. He likes to say Africa and apparently he likes Africa. That’s the official White House messaging surrounding this presidential trip to Africa. They literally have had unnamed White House officials giving reporters quotes like quote? “the president really cares about Africa” end quote. As a means of explaining why he is taking this trip; he really cares.

They allowed National Security Adviser Steven Hadley using his name when he said last week that the Bush Africa trip is quote? “an opportunity to demonstrate American commitment to the people of these countries... and to Africa,”

BUSH: Africa.

MADDOW: The awkward thing about this trip? About the Bush loves Africa trip? Is that on the occasion of his big trip to Africa? Bush is faced with the awkward truth that the budget that he’s just unveiled calls for giant cuts in US spending on fighting disease in Africa and US spending on UN peacekeeping forces for Africa. That’s awkward.

Here was president bush speaking today at a memorial to the 1994 Rwandan genocide

BUSH: Reminds me that we must not let these kind of actions take place.

These kind of actions: like genocide and mass killing and chaos in African countries? Which is why the president’s Budget this year calls for a 193 million dollar cut in our support for U.N peacekeeping operations in Liberia and Congo and Cote D’ivoire and a little country you might have heard of called Sudan. As in Darfur.

BUSH: Reminds me that we must not let these kind of actions take place.

Unless we decide to let these actions take place. How can you cut funding for peacekeepers and then go to the genocide memorial and talk about how you’re committed to it never happening again?

Wow. On top of the 341 million dollars he’s cutting from our contribution to the global fund to fight aids, he’s also cutting 193 million dollars from our support for U.N peacekeeping operations. You’d think that a guy who just submitted that budget in his home country would actually steer clear of Africa for a while...

You want to know who was the first nation, the very first nation to commit peacekeepers to Darfur to try to stop the genocide there? The very first nation in the world to step up?

It was Rwanda.

BUSH: Reminds me that we must not let these kind of actions take place.

MADDOW: Of course we’ll just let Rwanda take the lead, they’ve obviously got the resources to handle these kinds of international crises.
