I remember paper drives. What did they do with the paper? My mother kept a can on the stove for used fat which she then took to the butcher. What did they do with that fat? I was very young and only remember a little. I remember the ration stamps. My father was too old for the army but my two cousins were in the navy. There were victory gardens on the property by the USDA lab building (where penicillin was invented later).

As for thinning-using manicure or other small scissors, cut close to the ground the plants you want to get rid of. You do not want to pull them out as this will disturb the roots of the kept plants. Keep the strongest looking, healthiest looking ones. I know this is hard to do.

We get a lot of Canada geese here. They are very protective when they have their young. They will attack your shoes and chase you, being very loud.
