I recently came across a book that described the beginning of war-time rationing back in 1940 in England.
Things like 4oz of tea, 4oz of bacon, a sliversworth of meat, "snoek" (an edible dried fish product), powdered eggs, and all the wartime recipes that use substitutes like grated carrot in cakes and puddings.
And yet, as the writer of the book mentioned, although rationing lasted for about 15 years, during that time, the British people as a whole, were never more healthy, fit or well fed!
I'm sure that no one would want to go back to those days but it certainly is "food for thought."
A lot can be said for the simpler life - especially today when obesity is something that we all are challenged with - both young and old alike.
Like I always said, "moderation is the key" - to just about everything in life it seems.
