Pedro Nuñez de Villavicencio was born 1635 Sevilla, Spain and died in the year of 1700 in the place he had been born. He was born into an aristocratic family and had been educated by his father to pursue a military career. He discovered early on that his life wasn’t going to be spent in the military and instead began his career as a man of letters and painting at an early age. At the age of twenty six during the year of 1661 he was accepted to become a Cavallero of the Jerusalem knights of Malta. He traveled to Malta to receive his religious and military training. While in Malta he met the artist Mattia Preti who was also undergoing his training at the order. They became good friends and had established a working artistic relationship.

Instead of pursuing a career in the Spanish Military as his father had wanted, he pursued what was in his heart and followed the path to where he became one of the most talented artists of the Spanish Baroque period. He had received his schooling from Bartolome Esteban Murillo who was the son of Gaspar Esteban Murillo and Maria Perez. Murillo was also a native of Seville and had been baptised on January 1, 1618. His paternal grandmother was Elvira Murillo.

In the year of 1660 upon returning to Spain Pedro Nunez de Villavicencio was one of the artists who, with Murillo founded the Academia de Pintura in Seville. From 1664 through 1700 Pedro Núñez de Villavicencio travelled to Italy and Spain in the service of the Order of the Jersulem Knights of Malta and on several occasions was able to return to Seville. He also traveled through Madrid, and made an important contact with King Charles II who had unknowingly purchased one of Nunez’s art works.

It has been written that when Murillo died on April 3, 1682 he expired in his pupil’s arms Pedro Nunez de Villavicencio. Nunez de Villavicencio had been given the honor of being named as executor of his master’s estate.

In this reference document you will see his full name as well as his genealogy:
