Mother Earth News also has a monthly hard copy magazine that it publishes and hopefully one of my images will get in their magazine.
As always, competition is stiff.
This month's issue had an interesting article about Solar Power.
The article was pretty informative and spoke about alternative electrical power for homes using Photo Voltaic methods and units.
The science has progressed a lot since the seventies and eighties but it is still an expensive proposition considering that units that out put 9 kilowats of electrical energy from the sun cost 36,000 dollars.
The science hasn't broken itself free of the box because we are still dependent upon supplying energy to appliances that run on Alternating Current.
A small percentage of the solar energy is lost during the conversion process and that loss adds up over the course of a year.
The remedy is to purchase appliances that run on direct current.
These appliances can be purchased at your local RV dealer showrooms.
Stoves, microwaves, refrigerators and yes, even TV's.
There are two types of solar energy options. Stand alone and Grid dependent systems.
The stand alone system means that you have fired your local public energy source. In light of escalating charges I think one should consider firing these public service energy providers.
If you choose a stand alone energy system this means you will have to store the energy you get from the sun in deep cycle batteries.
I think there are ways to cut out middle men by studying and researching everything about solar energy.
Panels can be purchased cheaply, three panels for 199.00.
Over time one can purchase a battery of panels and set them up in one's back yard to collect energy.
I am not too keen on setting up panels on the roof of the house because the heat factor decreases the efficiency of the solar collectors.
In any case, its something we all should begin thinking about.
