Gecko Found in Bag of Vedge!

Margaret Perthen finds gecko in Tesco vegetable bag

14 January 2011 14:24:43 by Aishwarya Bhatt ( 5 comments )

Essex, Jan 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Margaret Perthen was not expecting to find a gecko in a Tesco bag that she had her vegetables in.
However when she opened the cellophane wrapper that covered the vegetables that she just bought from the supermarket, she found a Mediterranean Gecko and she shouted out of shock. She barely missed the animal with the knife that she used to open the wrapper.
The animal was not dead. The live gecko however did not have its tail and Margaret gently collected the creature and handed it over to the vets. The animal is now being nursed back to good health.
Margaret said that, “I don’t know who was more scared, him or me. But I felt sorry for him, he didn’t look happy. I’m so pleased he survived.”
The animal is believed to have been shipped from Spain where the vegetables were grown. It is believed that the animal managed to survive the heat in the cellophane wrapper primarily due to the fact that the vegetables were transported under chilly conditions.
A spokesman for Tesco has revealed that they are investigating the case. The British retail giant has already apologized to the 62-year-old and offered her a £10 shopping voucher.

I think I recognize that slogan - we probably have the ad, but know it under a different name

My veggie bags only contain veggies. But that beats the heck out of the humongous spider that dropped out of a bunch of bananas I was holding.

Thankfully, my spider was already dead.

Oh your story has reminded me of something that happened when I was a very young child.
When we lived in London, our house was two doors away from a very scruffy old greengrocers (the couple who owned it were at least 90 in 1963. Well, it was one evening (cannot recall the season - too young) I remember a commotion in our kitchen and I was whisked off to bed (it must have been 1956/7 & I was a toddler). Years later, in conversation to somebody else, my mother recounted the events of that evening.
My parents, my sister and I were in the kitchen chatting, when my sister spotted a 'spider' - it was my sister that rushed me upstairs as she was 'terrified' of them.
The spider was so large, that my dad had to get the 'hatchet' in order to kill it! The body of it was akin to a mouse's, it had hairy leggs toooooooo My parents found out that there had been a delivery of bananas to the greengrocers I mentioned the day before, so, it has always been assumed that it was a tarantula, that had managed to enter the house!!!
It was probably a banana spider that you found as well yeuchhhh!!!

I'm amazed they only gave the woman a £10 shopping voucher!

Yes, so was I actually - if I had found it, I don't think I would be shopping there again!!! I was put off by the article anyway, but I do shop at that store and also get my shpping delivered - so it is a handy shop.
I think that Fredo got it right when he said that it must have been put in it by some one - sounds very plausible.

wow!we loved them. But I know that it can be scary for some.
Mean that no one saw this ?when packing vegetables there.
I am sure that someone put it in the bag.Poor guy.

I shop at tescos - I will be a little a little apprehensive the next time (tomorrow) when I open a bag of Broccoli . . . . .
I agree with you - someone must have put it in there

We are very familiar with geckos over here because one of the car insurance companies features a cute green on in its television advertisements. If I found one in a bag of produce, I'd be disappointed that he didn't talk to me like the one on TV.
