Mandatory Ultrasounds? Why Not Mandatory Vasectomies?posted by: Robin Marty Texas anti-abortion politicians, with the blessing of Republican governor
Rick Perry, have made mandating women who seek abortions be required to
have an ultrasound prior to the procedure a "priority issue" for the
state legislature. But two Democratic state Representatives, Marisa
Marquez and Naomi Gonzalez, decided that if the government is already
playing doctor, why not have them step up the mandates and have them
sterilize promiscuous men, too. via the El Paso Times: Marquez and Gonzalez offered a proposal
that would have allowed a woman who decided against an abortion after
getting the information required in the bill to seek a court order
mandating a vasectomy on the unmarried man who got her pregnant if he
previously fathered at least two children with different women out of
wedlock. Lawmakers, including some Republican women, laughed and applauded when Marquez explained the amendment. She told lawmakers to vote against the
amendment and the bill if they did not want government intruding on the
relationships between patients and doctors. "If you do believe that government should
be making medical mandates, then we ought to have this amendment and
divide responsibility evenly," Marquez said. "What's good for the goose
is good for the gander."Although some anti-choice activists push mandatory pre-abortion
ultrasounds as a way to try and coerce women out of having abortions
with one final emotional plea, it's primarily a way to punish women
seeking abortion by tacking on additional costs and time barriers to the
procedure. In Oklahoma, where mandatory ultrasounds were mandated by
the state last October, there have been no reports of women changing
their minds once the ultrasound has been done.Abortion is one of the few health decisions where politicians are
allowed to step in and make decisions in lieu of what the patient and
doctor both believe are best practices. Should vasectomies be as well?
