What is the Soul?


Yesterday watching Turner Classic Movies, (they are doing a month long Oscars Award Winning Movies. Houseboat)
Houseboat is a 1958 romantic comedy film starring Cary Grant, Sophia Loren, Martha Hyer, Paul Petersen, Charles Herbert and Mimi Gibson. The movie was directed by Melville Shavelson, who also directed the original 1968 version of Yours, Mine and Ours. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houseboat_(film)

Synopsis
Tom Winters, a widower, is trying to understand and raise three precocious children alone. He gets a little unexpected help from Cinzia, when the children decide she is to be the new maid. But she is actually an Italian socialite who is trying to get away from her overprotective father.

During filming, Grant was smitten by the young Italian starlet resulting in a torrid love affair. Grant repeatedly asked Loren to marry him. She refused his many proposals and eventually married Italian film director Carlo Ponti (for the 2nd time) after some legal complications were worked out.

What I found that was startling was when Grant's character tries to comfort his (about) 9 year old son, about the death of the mother. Grant says he feels she is still with them. He hands the son a glass pitcher of water and tells the son that the pitcher is the container or the body, but what is inside, the water is forever. He asks the son to get rid of the water, the son pours some in into the river, the dad say is it gone or is it now with all the other water? Try again the dad says. The son pours a puddle on the deck, then gets what dad is telling him;

" OH, this puddle will evaporate and become a cloud and then travel across the sky and rain down someplace else." " Exactly" the dad says.

WOW ! right!! Mind you this was a mainstream movie in 1958....

So where have all the good films/writing GONE! Here's to the writers who take the script and with clear conscious KNOWING it will affect our consciousness!
