We are going to put words on them ourselves.
The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."

New Years Achievements
By Catherine Pulsifer
The end of a year brings different thoughts to different people. To some, the thought of New Years Resolutions; to others, thoughts of reflections.
The New Year symbolizes the ending of one year and the beginning of yet another. We celebrate this event, yet it is only a moment in time, like any other day. As Hamilton Wright Mabie said, "New Year's eve is like every other night; there is no pause in the march of the universe, no breathless moment of silence among created things that the passage of another twelve months may be noted; and yet no man has quite the same thoughts this evening that come with the coming of darkness on other nights."
Many of us set resolutions only to be disappointed by not achieving them. Why do New Years Resolutions fail? Mainly, because they are only a statement, or what we wish for in the coming year. There are usually no action plans, no deadlines, no back up plans.
I was recently reading an article in our local paper that discussed not setting New Years Resolutions, but rather acknowledging your achievements of the past year. These thoughts reminded me of a quote by Ellen Goodman:
"We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."
You may recognize some of the common resolutions: help others more; getting out of debt; lose weight, enjoy life more; spend more time with family; quit smoking or drinking; organization of home or office; get fit; learn something new; get a better job.
Looking at the common resolutions acknowledge the things you have done. After the holidays are over then you may want to look at setting your goals for the coming year. When setting your goals, don't forget to develop your action plans with deadlines. You will accomplish so much more if you just enjoy the New Year, recognize your success rather than setting a resolution that you may never achieve.

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.
Bill Vaughan
I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's.

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.
Hal Borland
Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.

First comes thought; then organization of that thought, into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination.
Napoleon Hill
A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other.

New Year's Day is every man's birthday.

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end.

One resolution I have made, and try always to keep, is this: To rise above the little things.
John Burroughs
For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
