seconds and the rest of the time is spent in justifying that original impression. Also this is how we all react to meeting someone. Guess that's how our minds work.
The other morning as I reached over the recliner in front of the window to open the mini blinds, I looked down and saw a "BUG" on the chair. YIKES... got that creepy feeling one gets at the thought of a bug. So I scurried into the kitchen grabbed a glass jar from under the sink, an envelope was handy, grabbed that too. I tip toed up to the "bug" pounced on it capturing it under glass. Taking the envelope to slip under and tipped the jar upright. With arms extended so it wouldn't "get me" I went outside for a better look, to tell the landlord to get an exterminator here ASAP!
In looking more closely and mentally taking notes to tell the landlord, "It's about 3/4 inches long, has ridges on the side, dark brown, and as I turned the jar to the other side, and it... it..has a bite mark?" Oh good grief...it's crumb from an Oreo Cookie.
In that moment of recognition, my body relaxed, I laughed, and realized, how first impressions can be deceiving, the eyes and mind judge and react, before taking a closer look.
I kept that "BUG" in the jar on my table on the porch, a daily reminder to take another look at all situations and people, I just may find a totally different reaction based on more information.
