JEROME, AZ – Experience the story of “The Unscrupulous Madame
Belgian Jennie,” a lady of questionable repute who amassed a fortune
that made her the wealthiest woman in the Arizona Territory, a place
once known as “the wickedest town in the west.”
The drama unfolds throughout the town of
Jerome as actors escort the audience to locations that are significant
to the story. Ghost Walk consists of mini plays at each site. The total
show time is approximately 1 hour. Belgian Jennie, this year’s guide,
will tell the fascinating story of her life and her death in Jerome.Not so long ago, prostitution was common in Jerome. And one type of
prostitute was called a Crib Girl. The crib girls were one of the
lowest in the prostitution hierarchy; she was only above the
streetwalker. She could service up to 80 men a night, but normally she
would see 20 to 30.Her profit came from the number of men she saw. Because her clients
had lower incomes, she would be paid anywhere from 25 cents to 1 dollar
per customer. Venereal disease was expected.The Cribs were located along Hull Ave in Jerome.They were required by law to be connected to the bars and provide a private escape, known as “Husband’s Alley.”According to Dr. Joseph Pecharich, a long time resident of Jerome, a
major portion of the crib girls’ business came from the mining
companies, which provided weekly visits for each miner, as well as
medical care and regular check-ups for the prostitutes
