Skies of Afghanistan
by Erik Johnson
This is a shot I took while flying in Afghanistan behind a Medical Evacuation helicopter. A beautiful country lost in War.

Currently serving in Afghanistan, CPT Johnson is an avid photographer who loves people and what they do. Candids are my absolute favorite and I take every opportunity to “steal†the moment so that I can share it later.

Hey Guys! I designed this site so that I can hopefully give you a glimpse into the world of a Deployed Army Occupational Therapist. As I may not be able to specifically identify some of the places I am, my goal is for you to understand what the daily life of an OT looks like while deployed. I will do my best to keep my blog updated and to provide you with as much info I can as to what my patient care looks like and the struggles from day to day are. Feel free to subscribe to the RSS feed and comment on any of my blog entries. I will also post pics as they are available. Just so you know, the internet here isn’t stellar, so it may be off and on for me updating. I’ll do my best! Have fun!!

CPT Erik Johnson enlisted in the Army in 1996. As a young Private, while stationed in Germany, he was involved in a car accident where he sustained second and third degree burns to over 20% of his body, most of which were on his arms and hands. He decided to become an Occupational Therapist because of the influence from the OT that treated his burns. He studied Occupational Therapy from 2000 to 2005, earning his Masters of Science from the University of Central Arkansas.
CPT Johnson spent the next year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center for his level II field work where he had the opportunity to work with soldiers that suffered devastating injuries from explosions to gun shot wounds.
Licensed in early 2006, he spent his first two years as an OT at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, GA where he has had the opportunity to work in psych, ergonomics, inpatient rehab, and specializing in Upper Extremity Orthopedics. While there, he was credentialed to be a Neuromusculoskeletal Upper Extremity Evaluator.
After his tour in Georgia, Erik served as a recruiter in Las Vegas where he was the subject matter expert on all things OT, PT, PA, and Dietitian for the 15 western United States. He used that time to Guest Lecture at OT schools across the US on Mental Health as well as Occupation Based upper extremity orthopedics.
CPT Johnson is now serving in Afghanistan where he was brought in to help set up a “Patch Adams†type of clinic for one of the Brigade Combat Teams. His mission is to screen and treat for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), Combat Stress, and Upper Extremity Ortho.
