Good Politics

Last night CNN put on a docu-drama entitled, “Obama Revealed”. I call it a docu-drama rather than a documentary because, as it is CNN’s nature, the product was more of an endorsement of Barack than a revelation of him. All of his accomplishments were highlighted and his faults airbrushed out. But what’s new?

What’s new is a small bomb that was accidentally dropped in the course of eliding over one of O’s failings. No doubt you are aware that while in the Illinois senate the man voted “present” 159 times in his seven year stint. Some people would interpret this as an overt attempt by him to either hide his true positions on issues or to avoid taking any responsibility that might reflect poorly on his voting record. CNN was honest enough to point that out. But then it tried to excuse it with an explanation from one of Barack’s spokesmen: “Some would say that’s just good politics”.

What?!

My surprise did not come from the fact that I could not believe what I was hearing; it came from the fact that I had been missing the point for so long. Doing nothing while in office; taking no stands and avoiding any risks, is considered GOOD POLITICS. Suddenly the lights went on! That is the very core of American politics today! It’s why nothing gets done in Washington and it’s why the pigs of congress could all jump into their limos and jet home for a recess two weeks ago in the midst of the most critical economic crisis this country’s faced since the 70’s. They had done their jobs. They’d done absolutely nothing. (Except for that green thing; they turned off the lights before they left.)

Just as shocking, and something truly revelatory, is the insight this gives us into the Leftist thinking at CNN. They offered this ‘do nothing’ behavior as a legitimate practice in ‘good politics’. An excuse, even a credit, to Barack’s wisdom! Keith would applaud this as reality; as in “real politique”. You do what you have to in order to advance your career and damn what’s good for the country. Are Leftists suicidal? Or are they simply incapable of looking ahead to see the outcome of their behaviors? When they get this “free” government health insurance they want can they not envision their political leaders doing nothing as they die from lack of medical attention?

Political expediency is the hallmark of the Dem party but its allure has just as surely drawn in the majority of Repubs as well. For years we’ve been blaming gridlock (the refusal of the parties to co-operate) for our political constipation. But just as binding has been this practice of ‘good politics’. Do nothing and no one can hold you accountable for doing wrong. If you never crap you’ll always have a seat on the pot.

You may not like my disgusting metaphor but if our political condition today needed clarification there would be little half-moons on every voting booth come this next election.

WHEN IN DOUBT THROW ‘EM OUT!

Bob Barr may get far more votes than he deserves. About thirteen million more.
