So I have a friend of a friend who is my facebook friend. We've never actually met, just talked on the phone and gchatted a lot. So he updates his facebook status to say that it's scary that the Gitmo prisoners might be released in the United States. I think what is scary is people like him, and I am not going to blast him directly. He doesn't know that I blog, but I would tell this to his face.

Our country, our beautiful country was created because of persecution. We've been a haven to those who were deemed as undesirable, or were persecuted based upon their relgion, etc. We're not perfect, none of us are, liberals or democrats. For years, we've been home to refugees. What is a refugee? According to wikipedia it is: a refugee is a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution.

There are many things that I don't know about Gitmo, but what I have read on credible news worthy sites indicate that people were falsely imprisoned or detained there for other reasons. Doesn't this automatically make them a refugee? I just wish that some people would be more open and accepting of others and their viewpoints. Could they do something bad in our country once they get here? Probably? but so could all the other people who grew up here, or migrated here from other places in the world.

The thing is that you cannot understand a person's circumstances. I guess one of the prisoner's was Osama Bin Laden's driver, which definitely is not a good thing. However, how did he get there. Did Osama say drive me or I will shoot you? Probably, we'll never know, you know why? Osama is trying to hide from us, or is dead, depending on whom you might speak to. Refugees come in all sizes, shapes and colors and walks of life. Terrible things happen to them and to people in our own country.
