Perhaps you heard a few months back about a slab of concrete bearing the boyhood signature of billionaire T. Boone Pickens disappearing from a driveway at his grandmother's former home in Holdenville, Oklahoma. Pickens grew up just next door.
As it turns out, Pickens himself had it removed to his ranch in the Texas panhandle. He has now returned it to the city of Holdenville, but a court will have to settle ownership.
David McCart, the owner of Pickens' grandmother's former home where the concrete slab was cut out of the driveway, said he intends to request a court date to determine who owns the concrete.
McCart contends he owns it because of access to his property and his family's longtime maintenance of the easement. The city disagrees, stating it is the property of the city, since it was located on an easement to the property.
For his birthday his wife bought his former home and had it moved to their 68,000 acre property in the Texas Panhandle. Problems with the McCarts began when Pickens' crews asked permission to cross the McCart's driveway when they were moving the oilman's childhood home.
Saundra McCart pulled her car onto the driveway to prevent them from doing that. David McCart said they feared damage to the driveway and surrounding property.
Pickens stated he had his crews remove the slab because he was disappointed in the condition of his grandmother's former home. The McCarts said health issues and financial concerns have slowed their reburbishing the property.
Mayor Jack Barrett said that once the city estabishes legal ownership, it will decided whether to return the slab to Pickens.
"We may decide to auction it," he added, though he did admit Pickens had been good to the city, donating money for a new hospital and other needs.
