Holly told Kenna but not me. That is, until yesterday. I had shipped her a computer that we had found here on sale, so they could put it in the playroom for the kids. I called yesterday to see if it had arrived in good working order.
She told me that it had, although they had not yet got it completely set up, since they still needed to buy a desk.
Then she added, "I don't know if Kenna told you, but we bought a new large-screen TV. Bevan hooked it into the new TV just to be sure it was working properly.
Last evening, as we were driving to Norman for the OU women's basketball game, I said something to Kenna about her not telling me about Holly and Bevan's new purchase.
"That was Holly's news," she said. "I thought it better to let her tell you."
As it turns out, evidently, Holly or Bevan or both said something in front of the girls about not mentioning it to me. Little Buddy--bless her heart; she always has my back--informed them promptly, "Either you tell Neena, or I will,"
Since she calls me two or three times a week, Holly knew she had better mention it to me before Little Buddy did. Holly knows that I think they spend way too much money on electronic gadgetry; After they moved into their new home in Texas, I really jumped on them for wasting money on a surround sound system when they needed to be buying furniture instead.
To be honest, they had a perfectly good 36-inch in the playroom; but they--Bevan especially--has just been itching to get a flat screen. He's like all men--he can't resist a new toy. Unfortunately his toys now cost a bunch of money.
When they were still in Texas, he tried his best to get Holly to let him buy a corvette. However, she did put her foot down on that one.
What can I say? They're Republicans!!! I believe it was Mr. Bush who said, "Spend! Spend! Spend!" And we Democrats get accused of being wasteful!!
But I kept my peace, just commenting on how excited the girls must be as well as how much more time they all would probably now be spending in the gameroom.
However, I guess Holly was still feeling some pangs of guilt because she proceeded to tell me what a fantastic deal they got at Circuit City, which is liquidating all its inventory.
"That was a good deal," I replied, and moved on to another topic. I WAS SO PROUD OF MYSELF!!!
As L commented when we met for lunch recently, "I try my best to keep my mouth shut where my kids are concerned, and most of the time I succeed." After thinking about it for a minute, she added, "Well, almost half the time, anyway!"
