Snow Sculptures and Surprises

Not
everything should be about what's wrong with our world.  Some things
should be about what's right with it.  And one of the things I find so
RIGHT about it is its natural beauty enhanced by the creativity of man.

It's
the height of winter in the northern Hemisphere.  One of the magical
wonders of winter is the snow and ice festivals held around the world
in January and February. These festivals showcase gorgeous, intricately
carved sculptures made entirely from snow and ice.

For
awe-spiring size, nothing can compare to the majestic figures that
appear on the sides of mountains each year in  Harbin, China.

Icy days and nights

The
Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, in Harbin, China.
open each year in January.  The temperature in Harbin can reach 40
below and winter lasts a full six months.

The
festival lasts for one month, and features large ice and snow
sculptures, ice lanterns, swimming in the icy Songhua River and more.
The northern hemisphere is a hospitable place for ice festivals these
days, so in that spirit, here is a collection of recent photographs of
all things frozen, and some of the ways we live and play with ice.

and winter fishing on the lake has a history of over 2,000 years. The
local authorities organize the old tradition aimed to attract a lot of
tourists and make the lake a popular tourist destination in winter.
