A terrible precedent was set by the Bush Administration in the sanctioning of torture. How much harm has that done us in the eyes of the world and in the treatment of our own captured soldiers? How can we complain of torture to them when we are doing the same thing?
I think it is absolutely essential that the world knows this was reprehensible to the vast majority of the American people and in violation of the rights of individuals. I personally would like to see the responsible parties charged with war crimes, if necessary g all the way to former President Bush. We cannot allow this precedent to become the norm for our nation. No person should be above the law, not even the President.
Now I have heard all the arguments about these men being terrorists, so the rules regarding torture don't apply. I don't buy it.
America has always set the standard for the rest of the world by treating prisoners of war humanely. We have NEVER tortured our POW's UNTIL NOW.
We have all seen those pictures of Abu Guraib.(spelling???) If the way those men were treated didn't make you sick to your stomach, I don't know what it would take.
Then waterboarding, putting men in boxes with insects, sleep deprivation.... at Gitmo. We would all confess to anything. How reliable is that so-called "intelligence", not to mention the moral implications toward our fellow man.
Consider how we had an opportunity to change their view of us; instead, we reinforced the fact that we are nothing but barbarians and infidels.
They will spend the rest of their lives hating us and recruiting others to hate us.
