If
you missed the Kentucky Derby yesterday, you missed one of the most
exciting races I have ever watched. Mine That Bird, a 50-1 longshot,
came from dead last to leave the rest of the field in the dust, winning
going away by 6 1/4 furlongs.
It was the second biggest upset in Derby history.
A
lightly regarded gelding, trained by an ex-quarterhorse trainer, who
loaded the three-year-old into his horse trailer and drove nineteen
hours from New Mexico to enter Mine That Bird in the run for the roses, the little horse was purchased for under $10,000 by two
cowboys with a big dream.
Jockey
Calvin Borel and Mine That Bird, breaking from the 8th position in a
field of 19, were bumped on both sides as they left the gate, leaving
the horse and jockey in last place. Three-Fourths of the way through
the mile and a quarter, Borel, hugging the inside began making his
move.Â
The
horse responded with an amazing burst of speed; Borel guided him
masterfully through the pack and ran away from the three front-runners
who lagged far behind in a photo finish for second. Here's a replay in case you missed it; and, heck, even if you didn't! This one is worth watching again...and again!
