Pecan Pie

When I was a kid, I thought I could never get enough pecan pie.   Well, one Christmas, I discovered differently.
My mother has four sisters.  On Christmas Day we gathered at one of their homes for the traditional Christmas Dinner and gift exchange.
We would always have Tom Turkey with all the trimmings.   Each sister would bring two or three dishes but had her specialty that she always prepared.   Mother always made her famous applesauce cake; another came with the ambrosia; someone else always whipped up a fancy cranberry salad, and one of my aunts always prepared her homemade pecan pies.
One year when we were hosting Christmas, because my aunt and her family were planning on staying with us through New Year's, she decided we might need a bit "more" of her pecan pie.
Instead of the usual two or three pies she usually brought, she found some twelve-inch pie plates and arrived with five of those suckers. Needless to say, with all the other goodies, even with about twenty people there, we barely made a dent in the pecan pies.
So, it became the standard joke--only it really wasn't a joke--that each person have his daily allotment of pecan pie.  In fact,  Mother or my aunt would interrogate us at the end of the day, wanting to know just how many pieces of pecan pie we had managed to choke down that day.
Since I loved pecan pie, I could usually manage to "force" down about three pieces a day.
But, I have to tell you, after a week of three slices of pecan pie a day, I slowly realized I HAD NEVER REALLY LIKED PECAN PIE. I began to wonder WHY I EVER EVEN THOUGHT THAT I DID.
To this day, I have a difficult time eating a piece of pecan pie.   Merry Christmas and take it easy on the pecan pie.  Take it from me!!   It's richer than you think.
