Are Our Lives Pre-determined?

I have wrestled off and on in my lifetime with the question of whether our lives are pre-determined, or whether we control our fate through choice.
There is no answer that totally satisfies me.  Certainly, we have no control over the parents to whom we are born, so that must have been pre-determined.
Some people say that if it's your time to go, there's no way you can change that."   Can't buy that.  Our life choices--to smoke, to drive too fast, to drive while drinking--can all affect our life's length.  Some people call that "tempting fate."  Sometimes, we do these things and get away with them; other times we don't.  On the other hand, people who have never smoked get lung cancer also.
The closest answer to a satisfactory solution I have reached is this:  our lives are pre-determined to follow a certain path.  We can make bad choices that may cause us to veer from our pre-determined path.
That will lead to catastrophic results when we try to steer our fate away from its pre-determined course.  Things will continue going wrong in our lives until we get back on the course our lives should have followed.
I think every person knows when he makes a decision averse to what he should be doing.  I know I did.  I got off my pre-determined course and nothing went right in my life until I corrected that mistake.

It wasn't easy. Other people who wanted me to stay on that course because it made them happy fought me for years; but I finally got the courage to leave. These people delude themselves into believing that you are happy because they are. Deep down, they know that isn't true, but they will fight it anyway and use guilt, children, money, or anything else they can think of to hold on.

It takes courage to admit one's life is a shambles because he tried to control destiny; but I did it and you can too.

My life is much better now,  and I am working to get it back to what was my pre-determined course.
