I'm trying to find a publication date in this old Watkins cookbook that Jeri sent me. I'm guessing the 1930s. I've been going through it looking for handwritten notes and splattered pages because those were the favorite recipes.
Here is a sandwich spread. I think I would use the food processor to chop things finely. My grandmother had a wooden bowl with a chopper that she used for nuts and other ingredients.
Nuts and Olives
1/2 cup ripe olives
1/2 cup pimiento-stuffed olives
1 bell pepper
1 cup blanched almonds
1 ripe apple, peeled and cored
A little lemon juice
Pinch of salt
Mayonnaise to make a paste
Chop everything fine, stir in mayonnaise, and spread on thinly-sliced buttered bread with a little crisp lettuce.

The other kitchen implement of the past was the the hand-cranked meat grinder. It would be used for this recipe.
Toasted Orange Sandwiches
Wash and grind one orange, removing seeds and white pith. Add 4 or more tablespoons sugar. Spread between slices of buttered bread, and toast in the oven.

If you said "Onion Sandwich" to me, I'd picture a big slice of onion between two slices of bread. This particular recipe would be good with drained crushed pineapple in it.
Onion Sandwich
1 medium green pepper, chopped
1/2 small onion, chopped
Juice of 1/2 lemon
Salt
Watkins black pepper
1 package cream cheese
1 tablespoon cooked salad or mayonnaise dressing
Blend the green pepper, onion, lemon juice, and seasoning with the cream cheese and chill. Blend the mixture, adding dressing to suit taste. Spread on thinly-sliced buttered bread, roll and toast under broiler with low fire, turning to brown.
and lemon extract. Adrienne said she saw a publications date in the twenties
on it.
