Here is a recipe for a hot cider mix:
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 1/2 teaspoons ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground mace
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Store in an airtight container.
For Spiced Apple Cider
8 ounces apple cider or 8 ounces dry red wine
2 teaspoons hot spiced cider mix
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange rind twists or 1 lemon twist
Heat the cider or wine until hot but not boiling. Stir in the mix and let steep until the sugar melts. Garnish with the cinnamon stick and the citrus garnish.
For a richer recipe that also works well for hot buttered rum, cream a stick of butter and incorporate the above dry spice mix into it. Store in the refrigerator. Use about 1 tablespoon per cup, mix with boiling water and rum to taste. Oh, yum.
