These are the fox's favorites. He eats more of them than he buries. It makes a lot.
Dog Biscuits
2 bouillon cubes
1 1/2 cup hot water water with meat drippings (see note)
1 cup uncooked oats
3/4 cup powdered milk
1 egg, beaten
1/3 cup peanut butter or margarine
3/4 cup cornmeal
3 cups whole wheat flour
Note: any broth will do. In a large bowl pour the hot water over the oatmeal, peanut butter, and bouillon cubes. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in the powdered milk, cornmeal, and egg. Stir in the flour 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Knead 3 or 4 minutes (I use my mixer), adding more flour if needed to make a very stiff dough. Pat or roll to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into bone or other shapes (I do cats). Place on a greased cookie sheet and bake 50 minutes at 350 degrees. Allow to cool and dry out until hard. Makes about 1 3/4 pounds.
Homemade Cat Treats
1 1/2 cups cooked chicken or turkey
1 large egg
2 tablespoons chicken broth
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
In a blender or food processor whirl chicken, egg, and broth until smooth. Scrape into a bowl. Add cornmeal and 1/2 cup flour, stir until moistened. Cover dough and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Roll out 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured board. Cut into 1/2 inch squares or triangles. Scatter on 3 greased 12 by 15 inch baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees until golden, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven, stir in the pans, and let cool. Put in an airtight container - will keep up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator, or you can freeze them for longer storage. Makes about 3 cups.
