------------------Burcher in the heart of NSW; camping with hot showers and power for a small donation
Quiet location in a small town with nice friendly people. There is a general store/postal agency, a
pub and a few sporting venues. CP has powered sites, hot showers, picnic tables and chairs, and
plans to make a barbecue area at this community built amenities block soon. Drinking water and
non drinking water on tap. The price per night? A donation (eg gold coin). When I asked around and
found where to make the donation (the Pub), the man behind the bar said "You don't need to make a
donation". Oh yes I do! It was a hot afternoon and we even ran the air conditioner. A while later a
member of the community who acts as caretaker came to check the power was working. They don’t
get many visitors and last time someone came to the camping area the power didn’t work and
required a visit from the electricity company as it was a supply fault.
If you get a chance, visit the tiny NSW rural town of Burcher, to the north of West Wyalong in
NSW. It is community run and the locals will be pleased to see you. They have suffered over the
years from drought, and the rail line to the town is now closed with the station master’s house and
grain bins derelict. There is some dirt road to reach the town. When we were there late 2009 the
primary school was set to close with only five students. They would join high school students who
travel by bus to West Wyalong. In October (every second year I think) they hold a Tractor Pull
event at Burcher.
Glen Davis near Wollomi NP NSW; free camp ground with hot showers
The Glen Davis Shale Oil Works, located in the Capertree Valley, was one of the largest employers
in the area. Producing gasoline, the operation was an important strategic resource during the war
era. Take a guided tour of the ruins of this once thriving industry for a small fee every Saturday at
2.00pm.
Although there are now no shops in this tiny town which is now almost a ghost town, the
community provides a free camp ground to encourage visitors. There are hot showers and a laundry
with hot water (trough not washing machine). No powered sites. During weekends and holiday
periods the local community association may open the hall (in the campground) to sell drinks,
snacks and ice creams. Former shops have memorabilia displayed in their windows.
