I was fumbling with my thoughts about what I could write for this blog when I got the news that a man I met briefly a few months ago had died unexpectedly in his sleep. Although I didn’t know him well, I still felt the loss of someone who could have become a friend. He was only 31 years old.
This got me thinking about what people would say about me if I were to die unexpectedly. What impression have I made on people and what would they remember about me?
If you do nothing unexpected, nothing unexpected happens. -Fay Weldon
I heard about an exercise that’s helpful in jump-starting your life when you feel at odds with where you’re at and where you’re going…..write your obituary. After listing the usual date and place of birth, family members left behind, and whatever accomplishments I’ve made in my life, what else would I want it to say?
Was a fun person to be around? Did people think of me as a trusted friend? Would my co-workers call me hard-working and dedicated? Would my cat miss me or hardly notice I wasn’t around anymore? Did I share my views with others on issues that were important to me?
These are the things that make up your legacy. If you want people to remember you for being fun, loyal, passionate about life, etc, you need to make sure those things are active in your life NOW.
A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.
We’re all going to die someday. I don’t believe it’s the end because I’m convinced my soul will live on in a more perfect place, but what will be said about me by those who knew me?
Will I be remembered as an impatient, angry, lazy, annoying, intolerant, uncaring, good-for-nothing hoodlum who drank too much, took others for granted, and left a trail of hurt feelings? If not, then make sure those aren’t in your legacy.
Don’t be afraid your life will end; be afraid that it will never begin. -Grace Hansen
