Medicare Data Accidentally Breached
More than 9,000 New Hampshire residents enrolled in Medicare Part D had some personal information compromised this month when the state's Department of Health and Human Services included a mistaken attachment in an e-mail to health care providers.
There's no evidence that any of the data has been misused, said Associate Commissioner Nancy Rollins, and the 61 service providers that received the e-mail have all been asked to delete the file.
The department sent a letter on Monday to the 9,300 people affected by the breach, who comprise about half of the state's total Medicare Part D subscribers. The letter urged people to check their credit reports and keep watch on insurance claims.
"We have received confirmation from most of the recipients of the information that your personal information has been deleted. Our efforts are ongoing," Rollins wrote in the letter, according to the Associated Press, which first reported the breach. "We have no evidence that the information has been misused or distributed further."
The personal data included in the Dec. 1 e-mail included names, addresses, Social Security numbers and information about enrollees' current Medicare Part D plan. It did not, Rollins said, include any information about medical conditions or drug prescriptions.
The e-mail itself concerned changes to Medicare Part D plans, Rollins said. Recipients, she said, included health care providers like nursing homes, home care providers and case managers, those who may advise recipients of Medicare Part D, a prescription drug program for elderly folks and those with disabilities.
The department found out about the mistaken attachment on Dec. 4, Rollins said, and contacted all the providers and worked with the attorney general's office to figure out what to do.
The department has 12 phones set up to answer calls, and anyone in the state who has questions can call 800-852-3345, ext. 8838. (Those calling from outside the state should call 271-8838.) The phones are manned from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., but messages left on the voicemail will be picked up the next day.
