Man Just Escapes Trash Compacting.

From Concord,NH
This is pretty sad.For it has been bitter cold here in
the last two days.
Then no remorse,Police arrest him after find warrant.

By ANNMARIE TIMMINS
A homeless man who's been sleeping in a downtown Dumpster for two weeks was inadvertently tossed into a trash-compacting truck Thursday morning when the driver arrived earlier than usual.

Guy A. Stevens, 41, managed to survive with minor injuries but ended up at the Merrimack County jail when the police discovered he was wanted on a 2005 theft charge.

The Concord police received a call just before 5 a.m. Thursday from someone who saw Stevens jump out of a Bestway Disposal trash truck and run down Warren Street. Master Police Officer Eric Crane responded and saw Stevens limping near Margaritas, according to his police report. Stevens was covered with snow.

Stevens told Crane he was homeless and had been sleeping in the Dumpster near the Durgin Garage for a couple of weeks, according to the report. Before Thursday, Stevens said he had been able to get out of the Dumpster before the truck arrived. But that morning, it had come early, he said.

Stevens was unable to climb out of the Dumpster before it was lifted and emptied into the Bestway truck, he said. He was even more helpless when the truck began compacting. Stevens said there wasn't much trash in the truck yet and, somehow, the compacting didn't crush him.

Neither the Bestway driver or his supervisor could be reached yesterday.

Crane offered to get Stevens medical attention for his minor injuries, but Stevens declined. As is routine on police calls, Crane ran Stevens's name through dispatch records. The search turned up a match: Stevens never appeared in court after he was indicted in 2005 in Merrimack County Superior Court for theft.

According to records in that case, Stevens stole about $1,200 from his wife in June 2004 by writing 12 checks on his closed bank account and depositing them into her account. Stevens then withdrew the money from his wife's account through a bank machine, even though he knew his checks were no good, according to the indictment.

At that time, Stevens listed a Vermont address. This week, he gave the police the Contoocook address of relatives who said yesterday they have not heard from Stevens for many months. They were unaware he was in the area, they said.

Given the warrant for Stevens arrest, the Concord police took Stevens to the jail Thursday morning. There, jail staff discovered he had numerous identification cards that were not his, according to the police report. The report did not say whose they were.

Stevens, who was still at the jail yesterday and could not be reached, will now be arraigned on the outstanding theft and failure to appear charges.

Close calls like Stevens's are not unheard of.

In 2001, a Canadian man awoke in a Dumpster as he was being loaded into a dump truck. His moaning alerted workers and he was rescued, but not before he suffered a fractured jaw, arm and ribs, according to a news report.

The year before, in Utah, a man spent the night in a Dumpster after an argument with his wife. He too was dumped into a dump truck the next morning and was unable to get the driver's attention until a second stop. More recently a Virginia man had the same experience but suffered more serious injuries.

Some people have been less fortunate. A New York man was decapitated when the Dumpster he was sleeping in was emptied into a truck.
