Sen. Deborah Reynolds of Plymouth, chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee, voted for the amended gay marriage. Her vote drew an unusual tribute from Sen. Lou D’Allesandro.

The New Hampshire Senate surprised everyone last week, when an upset vote to approve same-sex marriage followed a 14-10 vote to approve medical marijuana, much to Gov. John Lynch's reputed angst.
Let's just take a moment to appreciate the way the New Hampshire rhetoric has shaped up in response: It's conservative Republicans vs. liberal Democrats. Helpfully, each party has already started caricaturing the other's leader: It's Rip Van (John) Sununu vs. "Radical" Ray Buckley.
Within hours of the Senate's nail-biter of a vote on gay marriage, Republicans turned the spotlight to Buckley, the openly gay chairman of the Democratic Party.
Well, it wasn't just Republicans. Leaders of the Human Rights Campaign credited Buckley for representing the pro-gay-marriage fight with Senate Democrats, saying in a blog post that Buckley had "been working hard behind the scenes to secure the votes needed to pass this bill."
Wrote HRC Field Director Marty Rouse on Wednesday: "New Hampshire's openly gay Democratic chair is calling in every chit he can to win the vote later today. He met for over eight hours on Tuesday with the Senate Democratic Caucus trying to get the votes needed to pass the marriage bill."
Patrick Hynes's conservative "news" site NowHampshire also touted Buckley's role with this headline: "Buckley Whipping Dem Senators Hard." (No comment on that hed.)
Touting Rouse's remarks, Republicans accused Buckley of working with a "radical, out-of-state, special interest group."
"It's obvious that Ray Buckley has been misleading the public, secretly working to pass the Democrats' radical agenda and undermining his party's governor," said Republican Party spokesman Ryan Williams. "Gov. Lynch should immediately make it clear that he will veto this radical legislation and admonish Chairman Buckley's insubordination."
Democratic Party spokeswoman
Victoria Bonney responds, essentially, pish posh. Sure, she said, Buckley has been attending Senate caucus meetings for years and stays at them however long they last. She pointed to a University of New Hampshire poll last week (conducted for the pro-gay-marriage Freedom to Marry Coalition) that found 55 percent of New Hampshire residents support gay marriage.
"What does Rip Van Sununu say? He referred to those residents as 'radicals' for supporting marriage equality," Bonney sallied back. She added: "So everyone is radical except for those in the NHGOP? All five of them?"
Bonney says "Rip Van Sununu" will be a new "series" from the Democratic Party. The theme? "He slept through the progress that New Hampshire made over the last 20 years," Bonney said. "Rip Van Sununu is leading his party resolutely into the past."
What's the difference?
The last-minute, apparently game-changing amendment to the gay marriage bill sure contained many different words than the original bill. But what's the difference?
Senate backers pointed to text that underscores the difference between civil and religious marriage ceremonies, emphasizing the rights of pastors, rabbis, priests and others who conduct weddings to officiate at only the ceremonies of their choosing.

Why do people conflate homosexuality, transgenderism, and pedophilia?

There's no logical connection between these things (most pedophiles are straight males), yet people here and elsewhere are so parochial-minded that they just lump these terms together and even use them interchangeably. Then there are the even greater geniuses who view gay marriage as a gateway to drug use, war, famine, self-mutilation and other solecisms while babbling about the End Times.
Folks: Gay marriage will not kill you. Seriously, it's not like Ebola virus or even the common cold. Even if you can't stand the idea, trust me, you're safe. Be more concerned about wild-eyed nutballs like James Inhofe and Tom Coburn being in the U.S. Senate.

Perhaps "gayness" is natures way of providing birth control to an over populated planet. Plagues, famine and Wars have sufficed in the past to reduce the population, but medical science has now challenged nature and made successful attempts at eliminating two of these threats. It is now for New Hampshire to determine if the efforts of the human race to regenerate itself through the marriage between a Man and a Woman should extend itself for future generations. The survival of the human race is being challenged by misdirected members .

Ive always wondered if my brother would ever be able to come back home here to NH where he was born and raised and be able to live free or die like the rest of us. And now it looks like he just might have that chance. Why should he be sanctioned and exlied for/from living here because he is different than others? He has the right to be happy just like anyone else does. And if that is too much for your delicate sensibilities....suck it up buttercup, cause it looks like my brother can finally come home.

...couldn't you easily find out if Buckley was working with a "radical, out-of-state, special interest group." You probably already know this to be the truth but you stated this as if it's questionable or untrue. It's another case of liberal bias and distortion by the so-called reporters at the hopefully so-to-be out of business Concord Monitor.
Why are personal liberty and conservative ideals mutually exclusive?

Why are personal liberty and conservative ideals mutually exclusive? If you believe in small government, limited regulations, limited handouts, and a "get your business out of mine" attitude then you are generally invested in conservative ideals. Believing in "each to his or her own" should also encompass the idea that we each have the individual liberties and freedoms necessary to live our lives as we please, including equal access to marriage and access to pain relieving drugs. As such, it is none of the government's business who we each marry, if we even choose to marry, and/or what we put into our bodies, so as long as it doesn't negatively effect the public welfare. And if you're going to tell me that equal marriage negatively effects the public welfare, answer this: what is the effect of divorce on the public welfare?
The status quo satisfies neither personal liberty nor conservative, limited government ideals. There are two options: equal marriage or no government-regulated marriage. Take your pick.
Inappropriate add-in

An unfortunately inappropriate add-in "(No comment on that hed.)" that detracts from the content of this article. For those who regularly read political news, "to whip votes" is no big deal until you point out a perceived double entendre. You're implying something about one of our duly elected state officials that is wholly inappropriate and totally unsupported. I really appreciate your run-down of the week's political news on a regular basis, but come on, as an upstanding journalist you should know better.
