Found:2 Gray Geese/barnstead,nh

In Barnstead, two unusual guests found a new roost after last month's tornado.

The two gray geese took up residence on Beauty Hill Road east, near a private pond, said Center Barnstead resident Michelle Barnard. "And they were walking up and down the road and terrorizing the cars that drive by and being pretty boisterous," Barnard said. "One of the ladies who has a farm across from that pond told me that she saw them come in right after the storm; she started feeding them."

Soon, Barnard and the geese entered each other's lives. One day, the geese decided to follow some people who were walking down Beauty Hill Road. And when they saw Barnard - her road meets Beauty Hill Road - the geese found a new human to tag along after.

"The looks on their faces (were) like, 'We trust you, we know you're taking us someplace nice,' " Barnard said.

Ever since, the geese have been living on a pond near Barnard's home. "They're really happy here. There's only one problem: When winter comes, they won't survive."

Which brings us to the advertisement that Barnard recently placed in the Monitor's classifieds section, which stated, "Found: 2 gray geese just after the tornado in Ctr. Barnstead." Barnard is looking for the birds' owner. If no owner comes forward, she hopes to find someone who can provide shelter to the geese when the weather cools.

The geese don't seem wild. "When they first came up to the house, I could reach out and touch them," she said. With some help, Barnard caught one of the geese and stretched out its wing, which she said appeared broken.

"They're awfully nice," she said. "It's hard to say whether they're male and female, but they stick to each other like glue." If you have any information about the geese, or about possible shelters, call 269-0112.
