I used laugh when people commented on old folks reading the obituaries - not any longer. That is where the names of my friends appear in print - usually for the first time. Dina and I went to a Memorial Service for our friend Cliff Saturday - it was actually a joyful experience, as so many Christian memorials turn out to be. They know the Jesus words that if you believe (love God and love others) you will have ever lasting life - and they do believe it. They are sure that Cliff is now having the time of his life and wishes we could all be there. Even his wife was smiling through the tears. This is quite different from the intellectual agnostic funerals I attended for 40 years where everyone who liked him was wailing and those who did not were kind of smirking that he went first. And it is another big thing that makes me glad I took the step and joined the Followers. The topper on the whole service was when one of Cliff's daughters got up andsaid"Actually we are not sure that father has made it to Heaven yet" - everyone gasped as this was so out of the character of the day so far - "no - she went on - "we expect that he is still at the gate greeting people and telling jokes to St. Peter." -and we all laughed like mad because if you knew Cliff you could imagine that exactly!
