Ten balls were attended by Barack and Michelle. At each he gave an inspiring little extemporaneous talk and never seemed to lag in enthusiasm, and at each he danced with Michelle (she does everything he does, as he said, but backwards and in heels - he stole that line from Fred Astaire). What struck me as an old band player, was the song they danced to at each ball - it was the beautiful ballad by Glenn Miller and Ray Eberle called "At Last". When I realized that, I thought they picked it for the title. But as I saw them dance - he in white tie, she in a fairly modest "Senior Prom" dress with ruffles on the top, they looked so cute (may I use the word) and so in love, that I thought it was not so much the title - Even more appropriate for them were the words:
At last, my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
At last, the skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clovers
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to rest my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
You smiled and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine
At last
(sigh - remember the days?)
