Scrambled, poached or fried? Neath couple shellshocked after chicken lays giant egg

SHELLSHOCKED: Patricia Mae from Neath with the four inch egg laid by one of her chickens. By ben wright

A COUPLE'S chicken has been through shell and back after laying a massive FOUR-INCH long egg.

Neath housewife Patricia Mae thought hubby James was yolking around when he said one of their birds had laid the giant object.

But when the 69-year-old winged it outdoors to see what had got her hubby in a flap, she was soon left with egg on her face.

Patricia said: "I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.

"We've been keeping chickens for years, but we've never seen an egg this size before."

The retired couple, who live in Golwg Y Bryn, Seven Sisters, were alerted to the unusual find after hearing some strange noises from their back garden on Friday morning.

"We have about 11 chickens," added Patricia. "They are usually quite chatty, but on Friday they were making a bit more noise than usual.

"When my husband James told me one of the chickens had laid a giant egg, I thought he was pulling my leg.

"But when I rushed outside I was gobsmacked by what I saw — a giant egg!"

And the size of the lay was soon noticed when they put it side-by-side with their other eggs — measuring more than four inches long and almost two inches wide.

Both Mr and Mrs Mae said they were mystified as to which of their birds was behind the large lay.

"We've checked them all for telltale signs, but we're still none the wiser," added Patricia.

"We're quite surprised that whichever chicken laid it is still alive."

The giant egg has led to speculation that it could be the biggest ever chicken egg in the world — with previous efforts stretching the measuring tape at around 3 inches.

However, Patricia has other ideas.

"It might be the biggest egg that a chicken has ever laid," she added.

"But I really fancy having it for breakfast!

"I haven't quite decided what to do yet."
