This is one of the castles, which could very well be the catalyst, in my ever onward journey to learn as much as possible about the wonderful bastions of a bygone age.
I say 'one of' - that is because near to this castle, lies Hever Castle - the childhood home of Anne Boleyn.
Once upon a time, when I was a little girl (yes, I was, honest . . .) I used to stay occasionally with my grown-up cousin and his late wife, in the beautiful county of Kent.
The mother of my cousins wife would often take me to see these beautiful castles; sometimes, we just stay in the grounds, eat sandwiches & feed the pidgeons, which would come a-flocking lol !
(for the life of me, I cannot remember her name) so I will refer to her as D's mum . . .
D's mum would tell me all the tales of old. Of Knights, Heraldry, Chivalry, Battles and of course 'damsels in distress'. I was able to listen in awe to her amazing stories.
The clever part, was that she would tell a story which was relevant to the particular place we were in at the time, and if it was possible, she would conect the tale with a place we had already seen or, was going to see! All in all, she made 'History' come 'alive'!
Penshurst Place, was another of our haunts, it had such stunning gardens . . .
I have already posted a 'bookmark' about Tonbridge Castle and I will have a look for the other two places I mentioned.
