The name seems to have come from the Scottish sun deity 'Bel' or, the celtic god of fire and it reflects the importance of the warmer months (then and now)!! It is also believed to originate from 'balefire' - a bonfire which was always lit on May Day eve (30 th April).
It was tradition to gather Hawthorn flowers-despite the risk of fairies coming in too!!
Ylang ylang, Tuberose, Gardenia and Lavender are the perfumes for May, that will arouse passion and ultimately reproduction (Lynnie - don't wear these)!lol
Happy May Day All
