Response to Mr. Mom

9-11-NEVER-FORGET
I went to lift something heavy. Very heavy. In fact, it took several
hours and these pictures only capture the very end of the project. It was a good antidote to too much Mr. Mom.
The tree in our front yard had killed all the grass. The topsoil was being
washed into the street with every rain. The tree was a male mulberry
tree and it grew like a weed. It was out of control and I was tired of
fighting with it. We will look for something decorative to take its
place once its remains have been removed. An Oklahoma Red Bud is my
current preference, but I could be persuaded to plant something else.
Now there will be some grass to cut in the front yard next year.
This beats sweeping and mopping.
Trimming the pieces on the ground.

Wobbly legs
I'll spare you the pictures of me actually climbing in the tree.

Brush pile. No burning allowed.
Here's most of the tree now on the ground. The city will come and pick up the pieces and add the charge to my water bill.

I didn't see this post earlier, but I have a sweet gum that I would like
to see go the very same way.

Some people get very sentimental about trees in the abstract: if it's a tree, they think it is special. But there are trees, and then there are trees, and wisdom lies in knowing when they are causing more problems than they are worth.

I was conflicted about losing it after the girls started showing interest in climbing it. However, their interest was not inherent, but a product of the sudden attention I was giving it. The shade was nice, but entirely too much of it. Anyway, you get the point. I finally "rolled up my sleeves" and got'er done.

We lost our 3-storey tall coconut palm to lightning. Had to pay $650 to get it cut down and removed. It was such a great tree. We had a century plant -- leaves have steel-like needles at the end of each frond. Had it removed. Three new shoots cropped up where it had been and before we knew it, there were three really huge bushes where there had been only one. We finally got it all out. Whew. Hope your new landscaping will be a success.

Thanks. This place needs a lot of work. So, a little at a time.

I know, right? These are the busy years. I'll slow down someday and enjoy some things.

Mulberry trees ARE weeds. We have a scattering of them out back and attack them with the chainsaw.

Anywhere you trim this one, it grows seven shoots to take the place of one you cut.
