Many people have not heard of Internet 2 , it has been around for a few years and it is laying the foundation of the next generation of web technology and usage. Just as our current Internet got its foundation in academic institutions, Internet 2 is being utilized by Universities and school systems to bring cutting edge technology right to the classroom.

Also named Abilene, this super high speed network facilitates the delivery of bandwidth intensive applications such as virtual laboratories, digital libraries, distance education and tele-immersion.

The network consists of OC-192c (10Gbps) fiber optic connectivity across the U.S. When we hear about Doctors being able to perform surgery from 2,000 miles away, or orchestra members being able to practice together from various points in the country, this is being done and will be done over the Abilene network.
