America, the Cruel

I have been through this election cycle. I have watched and read and listened to the professions of how good we are, how far we've come, how we've entered into a "new" age of history.

At first I was as excited and proud and pleased as everyone. I watched the inauguration with great pride. At points I cried tears of joy. Then I was sad. Now I am mad.

Why was this such a historic event? I think that it was because our history was just a compilation of greed, injustice, and plain cruelty.

We came here and confiscated the land of the natives. We decimated them and left the few that remained with nothing. That was just the beginning.

We discriminated against every new wave of different nationalities that came here. But the "right"ones persisted and were accepted.

We kidnapped and "bought" slaves from anyone who would do the dirty work and bring them here. Even with legislation, we still treated them badly. We still discriminated against them for over 200 years. Thomas Jefferson, good man, went to the black mother of his children through an underground tunnel so he wouldn't be seen. Ah, but he was so smart and good that we carved his image on a mountain along with good man Lincoln, who freed slaves in the south, who were not obeying the rules of the land anyway. I do concede the Emancipation Proclamation (probably only created and signed with the urging of Frederick Douglass)... Not so easy to follow its intent, was it? How many died, trying?

We discriminated against a population that "looked different," first brought here to work on the railroads. We used the excuse of WWII to incarcerate them, American citizens... not the Germans, not the Italians... just them. We took their property and goods and left them with nothing.

We discriminated against the people from the south of us. They crossed the borders to work in low paying jobs, lived in shacks that were seen in documentaries, with deplorable conditions. Yet they stayed and did the dirty work, so they could feed their families in their land of origin.

2008-1776=232 years. We have elected a man of color. We congratulate ourselves... for finally doing something the rest of the world do with no fanfare? The rest of the world lauds us because we still have power, the power to descimate the world. We have shown that in recent years. We have wrecked the world economy because we have the power.

We elected an articulate, educated, intelligent, pragmatic human being. Why is it so historic that he has black blood? But, WE did elect him. And, now we are so full of pride and self-congratulation and feel that we are so very very good. All I can say is BS. Read my title again.

And, to those who think, "This is not sunlight, who is sweet, deprecating, good humored...," Yes, this is a side of me kept within myself. Which reminds me, why do we like women who are sweet, kind, and don't make waves? Why was Hillary such a threat to so many? Ah, yes! The subjugation of women! America, America... you have a long way to go.
