How Do They Get There?

HOW DO THEY GET THERE? I always am amazed when I come in from taking a walk, especially after a rain when the sidewalk or streets are still damp, how the hell does the right size twig or pebble or leaf get to be just the right size to get embedded in the sole of my sneakers . I have to pry them out with toothpicks or sometimes need a paper clip . It's quite annoying and time consuming. It never happens when I walk on water.

My socks get wet when walking on water but the grooves in my sneakers have no dirt in them .
