A BEER IN THE PUB
Arthur GOODWIN and I had arrived in Alice Springs on the slow mix from Marree. We were off duty till the following day.
After taking our gear to the rest house, we decided to go to the Alice Springs hotel for a beer, it was a sweltering day, and we both had a thirst.
No sooner had we settled down with a pint in front of us when I noticed a group of aboriginals drinking on the other side of the bar. One of them got up and made his way around to us.
He sat down next to me and asked me to buy him a pint. Buzz off, I said! He asked again, so I stood up and said in a louder voice BUZZ OFF, message received, and he went back to his group.
Upon sitting down, he started pointing toward us and talking to his neighbor, who then started walking around to Arthur and me. I said to Arthur I think we might be in trouble here mate, he came right up and very politely asked if that chap was annoying us. Yes, I said, OK! He said and returned to where he was sitting; he hit the other in the face, put him out the door, and gave us the thumbs up.
